Obituary: Hughie Sweeney — A Pillar of the Boxing Community

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the peaceful death of Hughie Sweeney, of Sheskinarone, Dungloe. Hughie passed away surrounded by love, leaving behind a legacy of strength, dedication, and community spirit. Predeceased by his beloved wife Jean, his passing is mourned deeply by his family, friends, and the wider boxing community.

Hughie was known as “real old school”—tough, disciplined, and unwavering in his commitment to the sport he loved. As a dedicated member of Dungloe Boxing Club, he embodied the values of resilience, respect, and camaraderie. Coming from a proud boxing family, Hughie’s presence was felt not only in the ring but also in the mentorship and encouragement he offered to younger generations. His influence extended far beyond competition, shaping lives through his example of hard work and loyalty. Beyond boxing, Hughie was cherished for his character. He was a man of integrity, humor, and kindness, whose dedication to family and community never wavered. His memory will live on in the countless stories shared by those who knew him, and in the enduring bonds he helped create.

His remains will repose at his home today, Friday 28th, from 4pm with Rosary at 9pm, and on Saturday from 10am with Rosary at 9pm. Funeral Mass will be held on Sunday, November 30th, at 12pm in St. Columba’s Church, Burtonport, followed by interment in Belcruit Cemetery. The family kindly requests privacy from 10pm to 10am and on the morning of the funeral.
