In loving memory of Peter Fraser
A visionary winemaker, devoted father, and cherished community leader
With a heavy heart, I share this message. It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of award-winning winemaker Peter Fraser, age 51, who was found dead inside his burning home in Clarendon yesterday afternoon. His passing has shaken South Australia’s tight-knit wine community and all who knew and admired him.
Peter was more than a celebrated winemaker; he was a mentor, collaborator, and friend whose generosity and wisdom lifted everyone around him. As winemaker and general manager at Yangarra Estate Vineyard, he was loved, respected, and admired for his commitment to excellence, stewardship, and innovation. For more than 25 years, Peter served McLaren Vale with vision and heart, shaping the region and inspiring a generation of makers through his leadership and care.
His legacy is indelible. Peter played a pivotal role in McLaren Vale’s Grenache renaissance—affectionately dubbed the “Grenaissance”—championing varietal purity, site expression, and sustainable practices. His work made the region proud, advancing Australian wine on the world stage while nurturing local talent with patience and humility. He served the industry in many ways, including as a Board Director of the McLaren Vale Grape Wine & Tourism Association from 2017–2019, always advocating continuous improvement and meaningful change.
Peter will be remembered for his kindness, open mind, and willingness to share knowledge freely. He was an incredible person and a loving father whose family was at the center of his world. To his loved ones, colleagues, and the team at Yangarra Estate: your grief is shared by a community that Peter strengthened through friendship, craftsmanship, and unwavering integrity.
We extend our deepest condolences to Peter’s family, friends, and countless colleagues across the wine community. May you find strength in cherished memories, comfort in one another, and peace in knowing that his spirit will live on through the people he shaped and the wines he made.
Rest in peace, Peter Fraser. Your life was a blessing, your legacy enduring, and your memory everlasting.
